We didn't get up there to see the scrimmage but from those who did, I was told that they will please us with some great shooting and rebounding. We will see as the season is played. |

Kokomo's Lady Wildkats took advantage of a disastrous third quarter for Northwestern, scoring the first 15 points of the second half en route to a 51-34 victory in both teams season opener in Memorial Gym Saturday night. An offensive rebound and putback by Kendra Ryker with five seconds left in the first half gave Kokomo a 25-19 halftime lead, then the Lady Kats essentially put the game away in the first six minutes of the third quarter.Northwestern missed its first six shots of the second half, while turning the ball over 8 times. That allowed Kokomo to stretch its lead to 40-19 with 1:59 to go in the third. Following a Northwestern timeout, Hannah Treadway hit a short jumper from the right wing for the Lady Tigers first point of the second half with just 1:30 left in the stanza.Kokomo really picked up the speed of the game in the third quarter, taking a 40-23 lead into the final period, but Layden, in her first season at Northwestern, thought the pace of the game was not their problem. That's a tempo we are comfortable playing, but we just couldn't find the basket, Northwestern coach Kathie Layden explained. Without hitting any shots, we couldn't get into our press. A lot of our tentative play at times was due to the girls learning a new system. We've only been practicing three weeks and we understand we will have some breakdowns. I was proud of the way our girls hustled and didn't give up. Kokomo is a good team. Jason does a great job. The Junior Varsity won their game by the score of 33 to 27 |

Kokomo’s girls basketball team tried to slow down high-scoring Logansport on Saturday. The Wildkats’ zone defense worked wonders in the first quarter, but once the Berries’ shots started falling, they showed just how tough they can be to beat. The defending North Central Conference champions broke open a close game with a huge run to end the first half and start the second to catapult them to a 62-34 win at Memorial Gym. Kokomo coach Jason Snyder described Logan’s offensive onslaught as a “buzzsaw.” The Berries closed the second half with a 7-0 run over the final 1:45 to take a 24-17 lead into halftime. They then outscored the Kats 20-4 in the third quarter to push the lead to 44-21. The lead got as big as 60-28 with two minutes remaining. “It’s a group that can put 10 points on you in a hurry. It’s an outstanding team, very well coached,” Snyder said. “I told everybody that’s been watching, they have everything you need. This is a team that can battle for a state championship, it really is.” Iowa recuit and 2014 Miss Basketball candidate Whitney Jennings led Logan with 23 points on 9 of 19 shooting. She hit a pair of NBA-range 3-pointers. The first got her going after a cold start that gave Logan a 15-12 midway through the second quarter, and the second one made it 56-25 with 3:35 to go in the game. Rachel Jennings added 16 points, and Nakeya Penny had eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. The Berries (3-0, 1-0 NCC) entered having defeated their first three opponents — Lafayette Central Catholic, McCutcheon and Maconaquah — by an average margin of victory of 46.7 points. But the Wildkats (1-1, 0-1 NCC) held them to four points in the first quarter on 1 of 10 shooting from the field to lead 7-4 after one. They had the game tied at 17-all with less than two minutes to go in the first half. But the Kats shot just 29.3 percent from the field for the game including 3 of 16 from the 3-point line. “I thought we ran our game plan, and did a nice job. The end of the second quarter, they go on that run,” Snyder said. “Now we’re going into the halftime down, where we really controlled the first half. We had to change a couple things up, they took advantage of it. “I thought our girls played hard, we cut down on our turnovers, we did a decent job on the boards. It’s a very good team.” Jasmine Love had eight points and Brayana Fowler added seven to lead Kokomo.

Our Lady Wildkats took on Laf. Harrison on this Tuesday evening and we started off as usual on time with the reserve gam. The Junior Varsity has seen a few good outints and a few scares but able to take down a win in each of the 3 games so far. They are 3 and 0 so far this season. |

The Kokomo Lady Wildkats took

Kokomo, had a visit by Peru to Memorial Gym as their Lady Tigers were wanting to make some noise by upsetting our Lady Wildkats on this chilly evening. Our ladies took their game right at Peru and led at all stops for a victory by the score of 55 to 40. Kirby got fired up in this one and was a factor in rebounding and taking the ball right to the basket. Love still had the hot hand at the 3 point line and she made 3 from there for 9 points and she set up the other players for some god shots. Fowler seemed like she had superman powers as she several times took the ball right to the basket, thus opening up some room for rebounds and putting the ball back into the basket. She had 10 points for the night. Ryker played her usual tough game and made some great moves. All in all, our ladies showed a lot of improvement on the floor and that meant a win for us. Kokomo made 19 of 44 attempts in field goals and made 12 of 23 free throws. They need to practice their free throw shooting before it gets them in trouble in other games. the scores at the stops were 12 to 7; 28 to 13; 41 to 25; and 55 to 40. with Tinder leading the way with 7 points |

Kokomo'KadyKats
took their game south to Carmel, and what they ran into was a pressure
defense that caused them into having the ball change hands to Carmel, Too
many errors means you go home on the lower end of the score. Kokomo
waa down at the 1st stop by the score of 11 to 7, and was behind the whole
way.Kokomo escaped with what could of been a bad showing , bud managed
to get within 13 points at the end. Poe had 19 points, whike Kirby had

at the end of the 3rd quarter but just could not get over that hump . Kokomo
did rebound with getting 39 rebounds. They commited 23 fouls and 21 turnovers.
You can't win games playing that way. But just maybe they picked up some
pointers to win games later on
Whatever they learn from these games might prove valuable in the tourney |

The Kokomo LadyKats took their
game to Lafayette Jeff to play the Broncos and their defense was the key
to a win over Jeff. In the first quarter Kokomo ootscored the Broncos 10
to 1 and at the half Kokomo led 21 to 9. Jeff tried a stiff comeback
outscoring Kokomo 13 to 11, but then Kokomo went on 23 to 12 run in the
final quarter to seal the win. Kokomo was aggessive in this win over an
opponent on the road. Kokomo was led by Alanis Jones with 11 points, while
Kirby added 10 points and Poe chipped in 8 points.Kokomo hit 19 of 43 shots
and 16 of 29 free throws.Kokomo pulled down 32 rebounds, committed 14 turnovers,

ready for the Sectional.

The
girls
earned a hard-fought 38-37 victory in the opener, taking their only lead
in regulation on an Alanis Jones free throw with 2.7 seconds left. Jones
drew a foul on a drive with 2.7 seconds left and the score tied 37-37.
Jones calmly sank the first free throw and missed the second, letting the
clock run down and preventing a desperation shot as the Kokomo girl’s team
earned a hard-fought 38-37 win. Kokomo led only those final 2.7 seconds
and trailed by as many as 14 in the third quarter before finishing the
game on a 21-6 run. Briana Fowler had 11 points and Jasmine Love added
10 points, but it was Jones’ fifth point that made all the difference.
“I thought we had our best people in the right spots and we got the play
we wanted to run there at the end,” said Kokomo coach Jason Snyder. “They
didn’t come out on Briana at the end so she went and attacked the basket
before hitting a big free throw.” Our ladies played from behind until tying
the game to go into OT.Kokomomwas led by Fowler with 11 points while Love
contributed 10 points. The scores at each of the stops were Kokomo 8, New
castle 14. At the half New Castle still led 25 to 15 and at the 3rd stop
it was New Castle still in the lead 33 to 32. and at the end of regulation
it was a Kokomo victory by the score of 38 to 37. Our Ladies pulled down
35 rebounds, committed 15 turnovers, and 14 fouls. Good game to come out
on top in as this will help them in the tourney.
The final score this game was Kokomo 38, New Castle 37. |

Kokomo’s
girls basketball team got off to a flying start against Carroll of Allen
County on Monday night, scoring 19 points in the first quarter, then withstood
several charges from the visitors to put the game away in the fourth quarter
for a 59-47 victory. It was Kokomo’s highest point total of the season
and the win gives the Lady Kats a 10-5 record, surpassing last season’s
win total of nine. The Wildkats got six points in the first quarter from
Brayana Fowler, who put the Kats over the top on Friday night against New
Castle with the game-winning free throw. Fowler came up big at the line
again on Monday with two freebies with 5:13 left in the fourth quarter
early in a 12-0 Wildkat run that turned a 44-42 Carroll lead into a 54-44
Kokomo advantage. The run started with a bucket from Stephanie Helmer,
next, the two Fowler freeibes, then a wing jumper from Bri Poe, a free
throw by Anastacia Kirby, three freebies by Kendra Ryker and a curling
drive by Fowler to put the lead at 10 with less than three minutes to play.
Kirby led the Kats with 14 points, Fowler finished with a dozen, and Alanis
Jones and Ryker each scored 10. Poe added six. “I was really excited about
the fact that we had four girls in double figures, shared the ball well,
and got really nice looks,” Snyder said. “They do a great job of pressuring,
putting bodies on you. It was a concern of ours how we could handle their
physical pressure. [Against] Richmond and Carmel, that’s something we really
struggled with. I thought we did a much better job of handling that [Monday].”
Kirby in particular flourished in the paint. She snagged a game-high 14
rebounds, leading the Kats to a 40-30 rebounding advantage. The All-Area
player had seven offensive rebounds alone, to go with three steals, two
blocks, and two assists. “She was able to play more aggressive because
of the style of play that they had,” Snyder said of Kirby. “Any time you
have seven offensive rebounds — they’re blocking her out, they’re big,
they’re strong, and she fought through that — that takes a lot of heart.
Fourteen points, 14 rebounds is an outstanding game, one of the best games
she’s played in her career.”Her play embodied the grit the Wildkat squad
showed on the defensive end with its disruptive, trapping pressure, and
under the basket as they went up against a Charger squad featuring two
six-foot post players.Kokomo forced Carroll into 25 turnovers and outscored
the Chargers 22-17 in points off turnovers. The surprising thing is that
Kokomo did not convert a 3 point shot even though they attempted 8 of them.
But they took care of the rebounds and even though they had 19 turnovers,
They came out on top.It was Kokomo 59 Carroll 47.
The Junior Varsity lost a heartbreaker by the score of Carroll 37 Kokomo 36 in overtime. |

Our Kokomo Lady Wildkats took
on McCutcheon and this was a great breakout game for Kirby who scored 20
points, and pulled down 12 rebounds. A great floor press caused McCutcheon
into 22 turnovers. Alanis jones chipped in 11 points and the team took
14 steals to make this game a defeat for McCutcheon who is having a bad
year so far. These two teams probaly will meet each other somewhere down
the line in the tourney and Kokomo needs to sharpen up their game
so that when tourney time gets here , they will be ready to do the same
as they did in this game. Shut down the other team with presses, causing
turnovers and great rebounding.
The scores at the stops were 16 to 13; 29 to 28; 35 to 30; and the final was 47 to 39 ; all in favor of our Lady Wildkats.Kokomo took this game by the score of Kokomo 47 McCutcheon 39. The Junior Varsity Score, I did not find out. |

At the 1st quarter stop it was 28 to 4 in favor of the LadyKats and it was all forward from then on. Kokomo went into a press to slow down Frankfort and used the results to score baskets. It was take the ball right to the basket and were able to convert 4 out of 9 3 pointers, Alanis Jones and Jasmine Love put in 14 points each while Kirby was able to score 7 points along with taking down 16 rebounds. Kokomo had 26 offensive rebounds.Kokomo has their defense working and they seem to have confidence in their 3 point shot. The scores at the stops were 28 to 4; 40 to 10; 53 to 19; and the final was 66 to 36. Great game at the right time as the tourney is right around the corner, and our ladies need to relly get prepared as they did tonight. The Junior Varsity won their

Our
Ladies took on Anderson and boy did they get a kick in the backside as
Anderson put 74 points on the board to Kokomo scoring only 47 points. Anderson
was great tossing in the 3 pointers as they made 9 of 21 attempts. Kokomo
was only able to make 1 of 8 attempts. Kokomo had 33 rebounds, a lot of
those in trying to put the shot back up after a miss. Kokomo had 28 turnovers
and commited 15 fouls. Anderson used a full court press causing turnovers
by Kokomo and Anderson had several runs one of which was 13 to 2 and this
spelled the story as our Lady Kats just were not in this game and that
dropped Kokomo to 3rd in the NCC and their season so far is 12 wins and
6 losses. Alanis Jones produced 19 points to lead the Kats and Kirby was
able toscore 12 points and pull down 8 rebounds. Kokomo still has 2 games
left and things will be rough for them, but Ithink they can overcome.

Our Lady Wildkats took it on the chin, when they ran into a buzzsaw Tuesday night at North Central. losing by the score of North Central 71 Kokomo 24. Kokomo was never in this one as they got down early and it was all North Central the rest of the game. North Central was as dominate as any team played so far , as Kokomo was short handed because of illness of the players. Kirby played about 8 minutes took only one shot and pulled down only one rebound. There wasn't any help out of the rest of the team as Love was the only one to score much pointsand she had 11 points. Kokomo has to get healthy if they want to close out the regular season with Westfield, who is ranked # 10 in 4A basketball. Our Kats hit only 8 0f 36 field goal attempts and only 7 of 15 free throw attempts. Kokomo made only one 3 pointer and pulled down only 22 rebounds, while commiting 26 turnovers and 13 fouls. The Junior Varsity won their

Westfield
came to town to take on the Kokomo Lady Wildkats and even though it was
23 to 21 at the half, Kokomo just did not have the power to overtake them
and so Westfield ended the Kokomo regular season with a win over our Lady
Kats.
Kokomo did get as close as 34 to 30 in the 3rd quarter but Westfield knew how to slow them down by holding the ball and keeping possesion on their side. The scores at the stops were 15 to 9; 23 to 21; 37 to 30; and 44 to 32. Kirby was the only one to get double points as she had 12 points while Jones had 9 points . Kokomo shot 33 field goal attempts and made only 9 of them. On free throws they connected on 12 of 16 attempts. Kokomo hit only 2 of 7 3 point attempts and pulled down 27 rebounds committed 14 fould and 17 turnovers. Kokomo finished out the regular season with a 12 wins and 8 losses. Now it will be the tourney where you lose, you go home for the year. |
Kokomo Versus Lafayette Jeff |
Playing against a
team they had handled comfortably in the regular season, the Kokomo Wildkats
found themselves in a tussle over the first half of their Class 4A Logansport
Girls Basketball Sectional opener against Lafayette Jeff Tuesday night.
Both teams had turned the ball over a lot, and the Wildkats were clinging
to a three-point lead, 16-13 at the break. The Wildkats regrouped at halftime
and blitzed Jeff in the third quarter. The Kats led 32-18 after the third
quarter and eventually pushed the lead to 38-18 before enduring a frenetic
final six minutes. The Kats eventually opened up a 20-point lead before
finishing off a 49-35 victory. With the win, Kokomo (13-8) advances to
play Marion in Friday night’s second semifinal at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Jeff finished the season 3-19.
The Kats asserted themselves quickly after halftime. Brayana Fowler snagged a steal and turned it into a layup on the opening possession, then Bri Poe hit a triple from the left elbow off a nice kickout from post forward Anastacia Kirby to spark a 10-0 start to the frame. Jeff didn’t respond until a driving hoop by Aliyia Kind with 3:35 left made the score 26-15 Kats. Poe had seven points in the quarter, and inside, Kirby snagged three rebounds and had a block in that quarter. Kokomo’s surge continued for the first couple minutes of the fourth quarter where a jumper from Fowler, and a jumper and two free throws by Alanis Jones gave the Kats the 20-point bulge. Guard Jasmine Love led the Wildkats with 13 points while Jones scored 11 and Poe and Fowler had eight each. Kirby had just four points and took only two shots from the field, but finished with a team-best eight rebounds and added three assists and two blocks. Jeff shot just 21 percent from the field in the second half. Snyder went to his bench early and often in the first quarter, and kept rotating people in and out. He said that Kokomo got “efforts from multiple players. Cierra Tinder comes in and in four minutes scores three points, causes havoc, plays great defense at a time when we really needed it, and I have a team full of players like that. “I remember playing in tournament games and the adrenaline can zap you pretty quick,” he said. “When you hope to play three games in a week, you have to make sure that people are fresh.” Again the final score was Kokomo 49 Jeff 35.Kokomo hionly 2 of 12 3 point attempts. Kokomo pulled down 32 rebounds while commiting 15 fouls and 21 turnovers. Kokomo hit on 17 of 37 shot attempts and converted on 13 of 20 free throw attempts. Now it is time to take on Marion whuich could be a battle. Go Lady Kats. |

Kokomo’s girls basketball team took the floor after halftime Friday night with a seven-point cushion and a taste for blood not yet evident through the first 16 minutes of its Class 4A Logansport Sectional semifinal against Marion. Marion, nervous and rattled after an 11-turnover first half, stumbled with another turnover just three seconds after halftime. Kokomo pounced. The Kats turned that turnover into a post hoop by Alanis Jones. Marion turned the ball over again, and Kokomo responded with a triple from the left side by Brayana Fowler. When that bucket went through, Kokomo coach Jason Snyder let out a yell, and Marion coach Jerry Freshwater called timeout. “That was a big turn,” Snyder said. “I kind of got overly excited with that, but that’s fun basketball — when they are within their rhythm and playing basketball as a team like that. We drew a defender, hit the open person, Bre Fowler stepped out to the open corner on that and comfortably stepped into her shot and knocked it down.” Marion’s timeout didn’t help. The Wildkats smelled blood and attacked defensively like sharks, forcing seven straight turnovers and scoring off the first six for a 27-8 lead. Kokomo blew its lead up to 24 points by the end of the quarter and endured its own brutal stretch in the fourth quarter to advance with a 46-31 victory. When the smoke cleared in the third, Kokomo had outscored Marion 18-1 in the frame for a 33-9 lead. That was after shutting out the Giants in a 10-0 opening quarter. Jones led Kokomo (14-8) with 18 points and eight rebounds, both game highs. She was 10 of 12 from the line, including 6 of 8 in the fourth quarter. “There’s so much attention put on Anastacia [Kirby] in the post, and she’s such an unselfish player, Alanis has been able to take advantage of it, and she has taken advantage of it,” Snyder said. “You’ve got to pay attention to Alanis. She’s a great slasher, strong with the ball. She was, at the end of the game, able to knock down free throws.” Fowler scored all nine of her points in the decisive third quarter. She also finished with five steals. Marion had 22 turnovers in the first three quarters. The Giants opened the fourth quarter on a 13-0 run but Kokomo’s lead never dropped below 11. Vironnica Drake led Marion (11-10) with 10 points. The scores at the stops were 10 to 0; 15 to 8; 33 to 9; and the final was Kokomo 46 Marion 31. Kokomo was led by Jones with 18 points, Fowler with 9 and Kirby with 5 points. Kokomo hit on only 2 of 11 3 point shots. and pulled down 26 rebounds, committed 13 fouls and 20 turnovers. They made 12 of 35 field goal attempts and 20 of 27 free throw attempts. They play Logansport in the next game to decide the sectional winner. |

After several
years of playing second fiddle in sectional play, Logansport’s girls basketball
team finally broke through. In a field consisting of old regional
and semistate foes back in the single-class basketball days that the Berries
have traditionally struggled against, they were able to completely turn
the tables and dominate with this year’s once-in-lifetime type of team
— the kind of team Logansport is known for producing every now and then.
Kokomo was able to keep it close through the first half of play in Saturday
night’s final, but the Wildkats weren’t able to do so over the entirety
of the game.
The Class 4A No. 4 Berries pulled away in the second half for a 58-36 win and were able to finally hoist the sectional trophy afterwards. Kokomo’s girls basketball program has a lot of pride and that pride was on full display Saturday night for the three-time state champions. The Wildkats (14-9) bottled up the high-octane Berries (24-1) and star guard Whitney Jennings in the first half as well as any team had all year. The Berries led just 23-21 at halftime and Whitney Jennings was held to two points on 0 of 2 shooting from the field. But Whitney got the Berries going to start the second half to create some separation. She quickly hit a jumper in transition and followed with a 25-foot bomb to give Logan a 28-21 lead. Rachel Jennings followed with a 3-ball following a lucky bounce for the Berries to give them a 31-22 lead. Jasmine Love answered with a trifecta for Kokomo, her fourth of the game, but four seconds later Whitney Jennings swished in a runner for the answer. With seven seconds left in the third quarter, Kokomo’s Anastacia Kirby picked up her fourth foul of the game after having grabbed six offensive rebounds to that point. Whitney Jennings hit both free throws and Logan had a commanding 45-32 lead after three. In the fourth quarter Logan went to a four corners offense and forced the Kats out of their zone. Nakeya Penny then scored seven straight points for the Berries, with the last field goal giving them a 52-34 lead with three minutes left to play. Penny led the Berries with 24 points. The talented sophomore forward was 9 of 13 from the field. Whitney Jennings had 15 points, nine assists, six rebounds and three steals, which included a second half of 13 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals. Rachel Jennings had 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point range. Kiley Victor added three points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Krista Kyyroenen scored five quick points early in the second quarter. Maddy Price added six rebounds and two assists. Love led the Kats with 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. Kendra Ryker added seven points, and Alanis Jones added six. Kirby had six points and six boards but was limited to 17 minutes due to foul trouble. Logan faces No. 16 Fort Wayne Snider (20-3) at 10 a.m. next Saturday at the Kokomo Regional. No. 11 Fort Wayne South (21-3) and No. 10 Westfield (21-2) will meet in the noon semifinal.

For our Lady Kats, it is close up shop and go home. For those who really want to bring back a championship to Kokomo, they must use their spare time getting better at shooting, rebounding and desire. So next year we will find out just how much our ladies want to get the job done. For this year's team, you had a great year and we wish you all the best. |
These are the seniors who will now take their
next step in life.
