December 5, 2015  Kokomo at Lebanon
By TRAVIS MILLER For the Kokomo Tribune

Kokomo was really rusty in this season opener and Lebanon was  playing their third game — and second in two nights. Their extra sharpness showed as Lebanon earned a 63-61 victory, its first over Kokomo in nine seasons. Kokomo was out rebounded and Lebanon was able to hit those extra chance shots. Cox filled in for Matt Moore, who had to serve a mandatory one-game suspension after being ejected from last season’s sectional contest. Cox was referring to Lebanon junior guard Trevor Lakes, who scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. He also blocked four shots as Kokomo did not have an answer for him at either end of the floor. Five of Lakes’ rebounds came on the offensive glass. As the final score showed, this one was tight throughout. There were six ties and nine lead changes with the largest lead being only eight points by Lebanon. After Lebanon led 18-15 at the end of the first quarter behind 10 points from Lakes, the lead changed hands on five straight possessions in the second period. It looked like Kokomo would have the lead going into halftime, but Lakes showed his inside-out game by hitting a 3-pointer as time expired to tie the game at 30-30. The game stayed tight until Lebanon broke a 40-40 tie with 3:01 left in the third quarter on a basket from Will Byrd. That started an 11-3 run that gave Lebanon the lead for good and its biggest margin at 51-43 after Byrd hit a 3 early in the final period. Kokomo immediately turned up its defensive pressure and was rewarded with a 6-0 run with baskets from Jeron Gray, Marcelle Kenner and Jordan Matthews. Kenner was especially tough to handle as he used his size to score 14 points off the bench. While the run got Kokomo within two, the Kats never could get over the hump. Twice inside two minutes the Wildkats had the basketball down 57-56, but a turnover and a missed 3-point attempt failed to push them in front. Lebanon finally scored on a basket from Alex Siegfried with :53 left to make it 59-56. Kokomo then missed the front end of a one-and-one and Byrd pushed the lead to five with two free throws at :34. Matthews scored at :14 , but Lakes added his only two points of the fourth quarter from the line to clinch it with :08 left as he pushed the margin to 61-56. Matthews led Kokomo with 17 points, the final three coming as time expired.
I did not get the results of the JV game

December 8, 2015  Westfield at Kokomo
  by Mark Saluke

Nothing came easy for Kokomo’s boys basketball team in its home opener Tuesday night, but after the Wildkats prevailed 62-58 against a feisty Westfield squad, Kats coach Matt Moore put a positive spin on the close contest. Kokomo (1-1) couldn’t breathe a true sigh of relief until the final horn as Westfield (0-3) chipped away at a double-digit deficit over the final two minutes of the game. The Kats had just taken their biggest lead of the game at 11 points, 59-48, when Kyle Wade tipped in a Jordan Matthews missed free throw with 1:50 showing. The Shamrocks responded with a 10-2 run to make it a 61-58 game with :16.3 showing. The Kats were only 1 of 5 from the free throw line down the stretch, as Ty Sparling’s freebie with 14.6 to play accounted for the final margin. Aside from a 33-all tie midway through the third quarter, Kokomo led for all of the final three quarters after breaking a 12-all first-quarter tie with a 7-0 run to start the second period. Every time Kokomo tried to push the lead, the Shamrocks responded with a run to keep the game close. Not until Marcelle Kenner’s basket with 6:02 remaining in the game did the Kats lead swell to double digits as Westfield made for a tough out. The opening minutes of the game set a tempo that didn’t favor Kokomo as the Kats were called for four fouls over the first 1:20. With 5:32 to play in the first quarter, Kokomo had five fouls, two turnovers and just one basket. Westfield led 5-2 with 4:00 to play in the quarter when Moore called timeout and a different Kats squad emerged after the stoppage, as the Shamrocks took just one more lead, 7-6 with 3:10 showing in the quarter, the rest of the night. Out of the timeout, Sparling hit a pair of free throws, Matthews scored off a steal at midcourt, Kenner added a hoop and Matthews netted four more points to close out the frame. Matthews finished with a team-high 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting. As a team, the Kats shot 53 percent (25 of 47). Also finishing in double figures for Kokomo was Wade with 11 points on a 5-of-8 performance.
