Kokomo Tribune

It looked like the girls basketball season opener it was Friday at Northwestern as visiting Kokomo took a 51-41 win over an injury-plagued but stubborn Tiger squad. “Sloppy” would be the kindest way to describe a contest in which the teams combined for a whopping 71 turnovers. But both teams also found some bright spots, especially in the second half, as the squads settled in and played much better basketball over the final 16 minutes. Several times the Lady Kats appeared ready to turn the game into a runaway, but Northwestern’s young team never gave in and kept it close to the end.The brightest spot for the Kats was the 3-point shooting of senior Jasmine Love, who sank 5 of 9 attempts en route to a game-high 18 points. Two other seniors, starter Alanis Jones and sub Cierra Tinder, scored 11 points apiece for Kokomo. Kokomo scored the first nine points of the game before quick NW junior guard Kaitlyn Daanen sank two free throws to make it 9-2 at the first stop.Northwestern struggled early, turning the ball over on its first seven possessions of the game. But Kokomo had trouble finding the basket and made plenty of errors of its own to allow the Tigers to stay close. Treadway’s basket early in the second period cut the lead to 9-4, but Kokomo responded and stretched the lead to 20-12 on Schnetavia Williams’ hoop with 1:03 to play in the half. Treadway answered with a hoop-and-harm three-point play to cut it to 20-15, but Kaila Stiner hit a pair of freebies to put the Kats up 22-15 at intermission.Kokomo coach Jason Snyder noted, “We had 15 turnovers in the first half and shot 23 percent from the field, and that’s what’s going to happen [in a first game]. Our ladies pulled down 35 rebounds, and they commited 33 turnovers. They had 41 fouls and the scores at the quarters were 9 t0 2, 22 to 15,,41 to 30 and the final score was 51 to 41 all in favor of our ladies.
The score of the Junior Varsity game was
Kokomo 42, Northwestern 20
with Love scoring 18, Jones and Tinder scoring 11 points each.

AT   LOGANSPORT
The Lady Kats went into the Berry Bowl Saturday night and battled with the likely Miss Basketball for Indiana. Whitney Jennings put on a show, scoring 41 of her team’s 68 points to lead Logansport to a 68-48 victory. Midway through the first quarter Kokomo lost senior captain Alanis Jones after attempting to take a charge. At that time the Lady Kats were down six with the ball going to the basket to cut the lead to four. After her departure it took some time to get into an offensive flow like it would for any team trying to replace such a big part of their team.

I was very proud of the way the ladies came out in the second half. After only scoring 14 points in the first half, the Lady Kats scored 19 points in the third quarter and 15 points in the 4th quarter.
Unfortunately for Kokomo every time they would get a run together and seem to start to take control, Jennings would make a play or two and build a deeper hole.
Kokomo was led by Cierra Tinder with 14 points and Jasmine Love with 10. Gabrielle Smith had seven points and eight rebounds to take a nice step forward in her second varsity experience. Kokomo will be back in action Tuesday night at Harrison.

Coach Snyder
The final score was Logansport 68--Kokomo 48

The Junior Varsity game was won by our LadyKats by the score of
Kokomo 38  Logansport 18

NOVEMBER  26,  2013
AT  HARRISON
The game with Harrison at Harrison was a little better game out of our Kokomo Lady Kats as they used the shooting of Love and Lowe as well as Tinder who plays as hard as most girls in womens basketball. Our ladies hit 16 out of 49 field goals and 18 out of 25 free throws to set the pace in this game. Kokomo outrebounded Harrison on the boards 38 to 29. Kokomo committed 15 turnovers and 24 fouls.. This game should be a booster shot for our ladies and hopefully they will carry it on into the next game.
Kokomo was led by Love with 20 points while Lowe had 12 and Tinder had 8. Kokomo made 16 of 49 field goals and 18 of 25 free throws. Kokomo hit on 4 of 16  3 point shots and outbounded Harrison on the boards 38 to 29. Kokomo had 15 turnovers and 24 fouls.

The Junior Varsity won their game by a score of Kokomo 33, Harrison 29.

NOVEMBER 30, 2013
HOME with MUNCIE CENTRAL
Kokomo’s girls basketball team evened its North Central Conference record at 1-1 and improved to 3-1 overall with a dominant performance against visiting Muncie Central on Saturday afternoon. Jasmine Love led the Wildkats with 18 points, Gabrielle Smith scored 10 points and had six assists, and Allie Lowe took six rebounds for the Kats. Kokomo went up 10-0 and took a 17-4 lead into into the first-quarter break. “Jumping out and getting a good start was very important,” Kokomo coach Jason Snyder said. “Muncie Central has a great group and has had a great start to the season. Unfortunately for both teams, we had two forwards that were out [one for each team]. It was very important for others to step up and the girls did a great job defensively. We were able to maintain that [lead] and build on it each quarter.” Kokomo played without Alanis Jones, who was injured in a recent game, and Central was without Jayla Scaife. “I thought Gabrielle Smith did a great job controlling the game and was more aggressive to the basket,” Snyder said. “Jasmine Love shot it well again. Outrebounding them 34-18, that was a big key going into the game, as well as how many points in transition we were able to get.”
The quarter scores were  17 to 4; 27 to 11; 42 to 25; and 55 to 37 all in favor of our LadtKates. Kokomo pulled down 34 rebounds made 20 turnovers, had 14 fouls and hit on 5 of 8 3 pointers. Love led the way with 18 points. Final score again was Kokomo 55  Muncie Central 37.

The Junior Varsity won their game by the score of
Kokomo 28  Muncie Central 16
with Merriweather scoring 12 points

AT   PERU

Our LadyKats took their game to Peru and having started slow, they had to break away from a slim halftime lead to beat Peru 44-30 Monday night at Tig-Arena. The Lady Kats (4-1) scored just 16 points in the opening half and was up by one at the break. They broke loose for 16 points in the third quarter to take a 32-24 lead. “We got off to a slow start,” Kokomo coach Jason Snyder said. “In the first half, we did not shoot it as well as we have been. In the second half, we did a better job of going to the basket and not settling for outside shots quite as much. That really helped us in the third and fourth quarters.” Jasmine Love led Kokomo with 10 points. Gabrielle Smith followed with eight points and Cierra Tinder, Schnetavia Williams and Allie Lowe added six points apiece. Lowe also had a game-high 14 rebounds and Smith recorded five rebounds and nine steals. Josie Murphy led Peru (0-5) with 21 points and nine rebounds. HOME  with  JAY COUNTY

Jay County came to town to take on our Lady Kats and as usual this was one of the slow type of games where there is seldom a high score as that is the way that Jay County plays . It has been a good year for the Ladykats but sickness and injuries played a part in this season as well by having to play games at other times because of the weather. But then that can be anyone's excuse when they end their season with a loss. Thanks Ladies, for giving the fans some great basketball.
